Jordan promises to gather evidence on his coworkers in exchange for leniency because the evidence against him is overwhelming. Two years later, Jordan is detained by the FBI because Saurel, who was arrested in Florida on an unrelated offense, had told the FBI about Jordan. Jordan's father, fearful for his son, urges him to leave Stratton Oakmont and remain silent while Jordan's lawyer tries to make a deal to keep him out of trouble. Jordan's private investigator informs him that the FBI is eavesdropping his phones. This draws the FBI's attention to him and his firm even further.
Jordan starts his own business and unlawfully makes $22 million in three hours after obtaining Steve Madden's IPO in 1993. Jordan loses his job after Black Monday, the worst one-day stock market crash in history, and finds a position at a Long Island boiler room trading firm that specializes in penny stocks. He is immediately drawn into the drug-fueled stockbroker atmosphere, as well as Hanna's idea that a broker's sole purpose is to generate money for himself. With the FBI onto Belfort's trading schemes, he devises new ways to cover his tracks and watch his fortune grow. That ultimately leads to Belfort featured on the cover of Forbes Magazine, being called "The Wolf Of Wall St.". They draw attention like no other, throwing lavish parties for their staff when they hit the jackpot on high trades. As their status grows, so do the amount of substances they abuse, and so do their lies. So much that companies file their initial public offerings through them. Their company quickly grows from a staff of 20 to a staff of more than 250 and their status in the trading community and Wall Street grows exponentially. In the early 1990s, Jordan Belfort teamed with his partner Donny Azoff and started brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont.
